What You Need to Know About the Louisiana REAL ID Deadline

What You Need to Know About the Louisiana REAL ID Deadline

Beginning May 7, 2025, Louisiana residents will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights and access certain federal buildings — including military bases and courthouses. If you haven’t upgraded your license yet, now’s the time to act. Here’s what you need to know to stay ahead of the deadline — and why it matters.

What is REAL ID?

The REAL ID is part of a federal initiative that was passed after 9/11 to improve security and identity verification. States were given time to roll out these enhanced IDs, and now, the enforcement deadline is finally here.

In short: Without a REAL ID, you won’t be able to fly within the U.S. or enter federally secured facilities, even with your regular driver’s license.

How do I know if I already have a REAL ID?

Check your driver’s license or state ID. If you see a gold star in the upper right-hand corner, you’re good to go — that’s a REAL ID.

No star? That means your license is not REAL ID-compliant, and you’ll need to visit the OMV to upgrade.

What documents do I need to get a REAL ID in Louisiana?

To get a REAL ID, you’ll need to provide original copies (no scans or photos) of the following:

One (1) Proof of Identity – such as a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport

One (1) Proof of Social Security Number – such as a Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN

Two (2) Proofs of Louisiana Residency – like a utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement

NOTE: Additional documents may be required for name changes (such as marriage or divorce certificates).

Why does this matter for you?

If you fly for work or pleasure — or if you need to enter secure federal facilities — you’ll need a REAL ID.

At Knezek Law, we know that legal preparedness extends beyond contracts and courtrooms. Staying ahead of key federal deadlines like this one helps you avoid last-minute stress and potential travel disruptions.
